Donald Trump faced isolation over the mass attack on the US Capitol
As several members of Trump’s administration resigned in protest over his conduct. Even Facebook closed his account for an unspecified period, and so on, the calls grew for his removal from office. Elaine Chao, the US transportation secretary, announced her resignation on 7th January 2021. This makes her the first cabinet-level official to resign after Donald Trump supporters rushed over the Capitol to stop the certification of Joe Biden’s election as president.
Ms. Chao, the wife of Mitch McConnell, Republican Senate majority leader, issued a roasting critique of lawmakers opposing the Electoral College count in favor of Mr. Biden. “Yesterday, our country experienced a traumatic and entirely avoidable event as supporters of the president stormed the Capitol building following a rally he addressed,” Ms. Chao furthermore addressed. “As I’m sure is the case with many of you, it has deeply troubled me in a way that I simply cannot set aside.”
Mick Mulvaney, Trump’s former acting chief of staff, also said he would resign as Mr. Trump’s special envoy to Northern Ireland on Thursday. He told business news channel CNBC: “I called Mike Pompeo, {US secretary of state} last night to let him know I was resigning from that. I can’t do it. I can’t stay.”
